Mass Layoffs Across the United States
Mass layoff events declined marginally from February 2007 to March 2007, with four fewer events and 13,290 fewer new unemployment claims associated with mass layoffs. However, the number of events and new claims remained high, with the Bureau of Labor Statistics reporting 1,276 mass layoff events and 130,687 associated new unemployment claims across the country in March, 2007.
The unemployment rate held nearly steady, at 4.4 percent (down from 4.5% in February and 4.7% in March of 2006).
The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reports only on mass layoffs - layoffs impacting at least 50 employees of a single establishment - so the actual number of layoff events and of impacted workers during any given month is somewhat higher than indicated by BLS statistics.
California, which posted the highest number of initial claims in a single state in 2006 (317,907) led the states in new claims in March as well, with 33,172. Illinois, Kentucky, Michigan and Wisconsin round out the top five, accounting for a combined total of 49% of all mass layoff events in March and the same proportion of initial claims due to mass layoffs. Despite the high number of initial claims in Illinois, Michigan and Wisconsin, the Midwest was the only region to see a decline in the overall number of new claims due to mass layoffs in March.
